In Memoriam: Father of Early Treatment for COVID Dr. Vladimir ‘Zev’ Zelenko Mourned by Physicians and Patients
The man who discovered and implemented what became known as the “Zelenko Protocol” to provide early treatment for COVID passed away Thursday at the age of 48 following a long battle with cancer.
The son of poor immigrants, Dr. Vladimir ‘Zev’ Zelenko was born in Kiev, Ukraine, in 1973, according to his obituary. His family immigrated to the United States in 1977 and settled in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn, New York.
Zelenko earned a B.S. in chemistry at Hofstra University and, in 2000, earned his M.D. at the Buffalo School of Medicine.
A family practice physician, Zelenko was working in his practice in Monroe, New York, when the COVID pandemic struck in 2020.
“[O]ut of his love for both God and patients, Zev was not content to sit back and wait for politicians or public health officials to settle upon a prescribed treatment path,” his obituary explains. “People were dying. He began searching almost immediately for a method of treatment.”
The tribute continues:
Aided by initiative, good fortune, and from his account divine intervention, he discovered such a treatment in combining Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), zinc, azithromycin, and other various drugs, especially steroids, and creating what has come to be known as the “Zelenko protocol.” The key to the protocol was very early intervention to treat the virus inside the cellular level before it could break loose and develop into a full-blown respiratory disease.
Up to the time of his death, Zev had overseen the treatment of approximately 7,500 patients using his protocol and experienced only three patient deaths. The use of the Zelenko protocol has spread worldwide.
Zelenko, along with other doctors who promoted early treatment for COVID, was nominated for a Nobel Prize for his groundbreaking work.
As his obituary states, however, Zelenko mostly was the recipient of “censorship and condemnation for his taking a bold stand against prevailing orthodoxy”:
For whatever their motives, politicians and health officials worldwide attempted to either downplay or outright deny the efficacy of the Zelenko protocol and its simple, low-cost treatment path. Numerous studies were constructed to deliberately hide the efficacy of using HCQ (later ivermectin) in conjunction with other drugs.
Among those who ridiculed the use of HCQ to treat COVID early was current White House COVID Response Coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha.
In an interview with Covexit in May 2021, Zelenko shared his own personal experience with COVID-19 and discussed his cancer and how he had been able to endure this difficult period of his life.
The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) said in a statement Thursday:
AAPS mourns the passing away after a long illness of Dr. Vladimir “Zev” Zelenko, who inspired physicians to save millions of lives by treating Covid-19 early with hydroxychloroquine. Dr. Zelenko’s courageous stance in favor of patients and the ability of physicians to treat them will forever live on in his name.
AAPS noted Zelenko never hesitated to provide early the inexpensive HCQ and other medications for those with COVID, even as government and public health officials attempted to suppress their use.
“He generously shared his ‘Zelenko Protocol’ with all other physicians, thousands of whom used it to save the lives of millions of patients suffering from Covid-19,” AAPS observed.
“Zev seemed like an angel sent to us, whom we could only obtain glimpses of how wonderful he really was and continues to be,” the physicians organization shared. “He departs this world with our endless gratitude, and leaves our medical profession with a priceless legacy.”
